Danny McGee has been named the athlete of the month for July.  Danny has been with us since day 1 in April of 2014 (unofficially started 6 months before we were an affiliate).  He was here when we picked up and laid down the rubber mats, bolted the rig to the wall and was highly responsible for our growth in the first few months.  Danny is young, motivated, coach-able and one of the strongest athletes at Wreck Room.

Danny has always been making great progress with his cardio, gymnastics and flexibility but his strength gains stand out the most.  Who doesn’t like to see some stats?  Here you go……

Strict Press – 185#  20# PR (12%)

Deadlift – 445#  70# PR (19%)

Back Squat – 365#  35# PR (11%)

Power Clean – 245#  10# PR

Overhead Squat – 205# x 3 (up from 205# x 1)

Let’s start with the basics. Who are you and what do you do with your days when you’re not WODding with us?

My name is Danny McGee, I’m proud to say I’ve been a part of Wreck Room CrossFit since day 1. Joining this box was easily one of the best decisions I’ve made in the past two years, I was fortunate enough to make dozens of new friends and be taught by the best coaching staff in the state. Before joining Wreck Room, I was unable to do a pull up, I was unable to run half a mile in 4:00, and I learned I has terrible flexibility/mobility. But because I joined this box, I can string together multiple (strict) pull-ups, I can run a half mile in under 4 minutes, and I have never been as flexible as I am now. When I’m not in the gym, I am working 40hrs a week- I’m in the construction business. I also am going to college part time to further my education and get a degree.

We all find Wreck Room in a different way. Where did your story start?

Before Wreck Room existed, I attended Gold’s Gym in Glen Burnie and I would go around the same time everyday doing almost the same workout. So I noticed a group of individuals doing some pretty intense workouts and my cousin in law, Maria, introduced me to the group of people that were working out. Maria is how I met Butch Santucci. After he allowed me to do join their workout group for the first time, I didn’t want to do anything else. Since then, which was about 2 years ago, we have been going strong and making gains ever since!

What stood out most to you the first time walking into Wreck Room?

I would say that the positivity that every gives off as we are all working out together. Everybody is either pushing themselves as hard as they can and even pushing the guy or gal next to them to push harder, and that’s really what it’s all about. We’re all working out against each other and giving it all we have but are also working out together trying to get the guy next to us to excel and get better as well.

Do you have a specific “why” for CrossFitting?

Why? We are all family, there are no strangers in our gym. CrossFit is not about getting a quick pump in and leaving. We actually make relationships with other people and become friends while we are working out, people you never think you would even talk to turn out to become pretty good friends with and you see every day, pushing themselves and getting better.

What is your favorite part of Wreck Room?

One of my favorite things about Wreck Room is the energy that everyone gives off. Before the WOD, everyone is anxious about the trouble were getting ourselves into, and after the workout everyone is covered in sweat and relieved that the WOD is over. That’s one of the best parts about our box.

What is your proudest accomplishment?

My proudest accomplishment is the first pull up, getting that half mile run down to 4:00 and each PR I get really makes me happy, and glad to be a part of this gym.

If you could name a WOD after yourself, what would it look like?

Danny:

18 min AMRAP

1 rope climb

25 sit up

400 meter run

What is one exercise you would be ecstatic to never do again?

I would be ecstatic to never do another burpee or thruster ever again.

What advice would you give to anyone looking to get started at Wreck Room?

The advice I would give somebody thinking about joining, I would ask them if they’re afraid to work hard. I would ask them if they were up for a challenge, I would ask them if they’re serious about it, I would ask them if they want to see some gains, and I would ask them if they’re ready.

Anything else you want to add?

Lastly, I just want to say I’m proud to be a part of Wreck Room CrossFit, I’m proud of how well the gym has excelled and I’m proud that I walked up to this group of random people at golds gym and asked if I could join them, like I said it was one of the best decisions I’ve made. Like my buddy says ” It doesn’t get easier, it just gets better”
